Ice in the Arctic has shrunk to its lowest level on record, scientists from the National Snow and Ice Data Center announced Monday, breaking a mark set in 2007.
Scientists say Arctic sea ice is important because it keeps the polar region cold and helps moderate global climate, with some calling it "Earth's air conditioner."

Brazilian Senate eases Amazon protection rules

The Brazilian Senate has approved controversial legislation that reforms rules on the amount of land farmers must preserve as forest.The bill, which now returns to the lower house, also eases fines for some previous illegal clearance if farmers commit to a reforestation programme.
