9 August 2012: The Energy and Environment Programme of the UN Development Program (UNDP) has launched the “Technology Transfer and Market Development for Small Hydropower in Tajikistan” project, which aims to accelerate small-scale hydropower (SHP) generation through capacity building, supportive legal and regulatory frameworks and sustainable delivery models.

Small hydropower has a significant role to play in the socio-economic development in Tajikistan. The project was officially agreed by the Ministry of Energy and Industry of the Republic of Tajikistan and UNDP on January 27, 2012. This SHP project will also contribute to socio-economic development and climate change mitigation. Over its lifetime, the SHP plant will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 273 kilotons as well as approximately 819-4952 kilotons of indirect carbon dioxide emissions. UNDP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have provided US$ 3.13 million in support for the project, which is expected to run from March 2012 to December 2015.
