A draft of the Strategy of the Kyrgyz Republic on adaptation to climate change by 2020, providing adaptations for the main sectors: water, agriculture, human health, climate emergencies, forest resources and biodiversity.

Over the past decade, climate change and its impacts on the environment, economy and society have become one of the most pressing global issues of the international community. According to the conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the vulnerability of Central Asia, including the Kyrgyz Republic, climate change will increase, adding to the pressure on natural resources and the environment associated with rapid urbanization, industrialization and economic development.

Climate change leads to a weakening of food security, challenges the provision of uninterrupted water supply, adversely affects the health of the population. Many countries have already started preparing for the impacts of climate change through the development of specific policy documents and implementation of so-called "adaptation" measures.

Feature of Kyrgyzstan are quite strict extreme environmental conditions and high vulnerability of mountain ecosystems. Expert analysis defines the situation in the Kyrgyz Republic as critical in terms of the transition to irreversible climate change. Preliminary calculations show that for the worst case scenarios of climate change annual economic loss for the country may be about 1350 million. Climate change may bring, in the end, all efforts to improve the quality of life, in this regard, the development and implementation of national climate policy, particularly on adaptation to climate change is imperative. Kyrgyz Republic acceded to the international climate change documents (United Nations Framework Convention Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol), and adaptation to climate change is regarded as one of the key elements of a future national climate policy. However, unlike other countries, where adaptive strategies have long been developed and implemented, Kyrgyzstan does far only the first steps in this direction. Reasons for the late start to the adaptation process of many: it is the need to address more pressing economic and social issues, as well as lack of awareness of decision makers of the consequences of climate change, both on economic development and on the individual. early action in part of adaptation to climate change will bring significant economic benefits to Kyrgyzstan and will minimize threats to ecosystems, human health, economic development, property and infrastructure. Estimates the cost of the production of adaptation measures to prevent the negative effects of climate change suggest that the benefits of making intelligent decisions can be substantial and comprehensive approach combines science, technology, and the decision makers will reduce the vulnerability of society and the economy to climate change.
